About the Language Learning Process
It is a life time journey to learn a language, however the major part of this journey takes place in the early years. Generally in the first five years of a child’s life, brain development is at its peak. The high receptiveness of the child makes them able to learn many things through their experiences. Through the back and forth dialogue with important adults in their family, children are able to learn the languages, this is according to studies. In order for the child to be motivated to learn a parent needs to give a good feedback any time the child communicates through gesture, sound or a word.
A child’s language learning process is reinforced by responsive feedback. Children who rarely communicate or do not communicate at all did not receive the essential feedback that would have built their language skills. Less or no communication to the child by the family members causes the child to communicate less. Any communication gesture from a child should always be responded to by their adult family members. The communication development of a child is delayed if the above is done. Some parents are advised that if they wait, the child will outgrow this situation. It is not encouraged to do the wait and watch approach as it derails the child’s language learning process in this critical stage.
Participation in conversations and activities will be very hard if the children have not developed good speech. It becomes worse when the children do not get the help they require. It is most likely that the children will be left behind more. On the other hand, a child who receives extra support from important adults in his life can improve tremendously. Speech therapy intervention is great to salvage the situation if done very early. Skills can therefore be developed by the children through communication skills. It will help the child to be successful in their future academic and personal life.
To help a child in language learning there are tips for it. Assisting the kids to build their language skills is the first. It is possible to do this by starting fake conversations with your child. Teaching the child non-verbal communication skills is the other tip. Being there to guide them is important. Children usually learn communication skills from watching their parents. Be careful when you are communicating as the children will take in what they see and hear. This will help them have great communication skills.
Offer guidance and be part of their learning process. Always be attentive when your child tries to communicate and you will notice your feedback helps reinforce their language skills.
